Convertible Byzantine Diamond Necklace
A bespoke 9K yellow gold Byzantine necklace with 2.00 ct of natural diamonds, designed to separate into three 7.5-inch bracelets.

The brief
The customer wanted one piece of jewellery with the flexibility to wear it in two ways: as a necklace, or as three separate bracelets. The brief was for a Byzantine chain in 9K yellow gold, with diamond-set links.
The finished necklace needed to sit at a wearable length when all three sections were joined, while each individual section also had to work as a bracelet.
The design decisions
Getting the lengths right was central to the design. Each bracelet was made to a finished length of 7.5 inches, giving a combined necklace length of 22.5 inches. The connections also needed to blend into the chain, so that the joints did not look like obvious locks.
We developed the chain components and lock design in CAD. The customer reviewed and approved the CAD images before making began. The design illustrations below show the link geometry, component layouts and the separate parts of the lock.
Making the piece
The components were cast from the approved CAD design and assembled by hand in 9K yellow gold. The piece was made in-house by Xclusive Diamonds and features 2.00 ct of natural round brilliant-cut diamonds in total.
Making this commission took three weeks after the design was approved. That is the actual making time for this piece; each bespoke commission has its own production timeline.
The finished result
The finished piece can be worn as a 22.5-inch necklace or separated into three 7.5-inch bracelets. The diamond-set sections provide detail within the Byzantine chain, while the connecting design allows the customer to change how the piece is worn.
The customer was so pleased with the finished piece that he ordered another one.
